Penn Pantry closing the doors

Posted by Robin Abel on

Dear friends,

Almost 4 years ago, my husband and I sat on the couch and dreamed.  We asked the question of how can we be part of our community?  We wanted to help local people from farmers to crafters have access to those who would appreciate their products.  We wanted to support our community by filling an open store front. We wanted to provide a service to our community.

To say it’s been an adventure would be a understatement. From discovering local people who create great items, learning how to handle inventory and cash flow, to being part of our community has been amazing.  It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but one of the most creative as well.  The best part, by far, has been meeting such an interesting and diverse group of people.

Unfortunately, we’ve discovered a retail store is very hard in small town Western Pa.  Expenses are high and our margin is low.  There is so much time and energy being poured into it making our family life void of time off and creating balance is difficult. While we feel Penn Pantry is an important part of our community, we will be closing by the end of November.

Our plan is to run business as usual through October. Items like eggs and coffee, products that we work very closely with our vendors and are easy to get, will continue to be stocked through October.  Other items that need shipped or vendors just aren’t as fast as filling orders, will begin to phase out.  There is not a plan yet for November but we’ll continue to update that as we move closer. Fixtures and décor are available for purchase so take a look when you’re here.  If you have a favorite product you want to stock up on, please let me know and I’ll let you know what we can do.

Thank you for being part of our lives.  Thank you for giving our kids such a unique experience as they watch how a business is run.  Thank you for sharing your stories with Krysta and I on a weekly basis. Thank you for telling us how much you appreciate the store. (But please stop because it makes us cry now;)

With love from the bottom of my heart,
Robin
