Spice-A-licious! if that's a word

Posted by Robin Abel on

A friend said to me the other day, "You are really into those spices!"  Clearly the vast amount of facebook posts including our new spices is saying something about my cooking.  We were not a bland cooking house growing up so spices are very important to me.  When I got married, one night I asked my husband, "How do you make ground beef?"  He answers "Beef?"  Oh no, that's not it!  You have to add a bunch of other stuff to it.
We've changed up our spices in the store to include 3 different companies with different focuses.  We've been using them at home almost every day to see how they taste on different things and they are all just amazing!
1. Primal Palate - This was recommended by my friend who knows everything about being healthy, working out, and wellness in general. She was excited we started carrying them and you will be too!
Hayley and Bill, the dynamic food-loving duo responsible for Primal Palate, started cooking together and taking photos of meals to post online. Before long, they found ourselves immersed in the world of Paleo food blogging, cookbook writing, and a line of spices.
After many years of developing and researching, they launched Primal Palate Organic Spices.  They are certified USDA-Organic, Whole30 Approved, Certified Gluten-Free, Kosher, Non-GMO, and Non-Irradiated. In other words, they are un-messed-around-with, and just as nature intended!
2. Steel City Salt Co. - Funny story - I was in Allegheny Coffee and Tea the other day and one of their people handed me a card for Steel City Salt and said I HAD to call them.  So glad for that suggestion!
Steel City Salt Company was launched in August of
2014 bringing on a new era of flavor and cooking to Pittsburgh.  Started by avid cook, pizzaiolo, and spice guru John Tarallo, he wanted to change the way people thought about not only food, but salt too!  With his interest in cooking and unusual ingredients, John set out to find the most unique salts from around the world. From flaky to fine, moist to dry, he only chooses the best-of-the-best from each region.
3. Private label spices - No, we're not out gathering twigs in the woods.  We work with a company who provides a list of items they private label for stores like Penn Pantry.  We've selected a group of items that you aren't going to find just anywhere but are very usable.  Blends like garlic bread seasoning, mojo seasoning, cracked pepper and more.
Creating great tasting food is easier when you can simply add a seasoning and go. The other night, I heated up olive oil in a large frying pan, sprinkled Primal Palate's Adobo seasoning on chicken, and cooked away.  In the morning, I've been chopping up veggies, throwing them in a pan with some oil, adding an egg, and then finishing it with Steel City Garlic and Herb blend.  What a great way to start the day.
Not only can see how pretty the blends are in the jar, but we have a bunch of them in jars that you can smell.  This is so helpful because each of us is unique and know what smell interesting.  Beware... people who smell fall in love with this great items.
