Making meals for friends

Posted by Robin Abel on

In the last 15 years, I've probably made about a billion meals for people between that season where everyone is having babies to supporting people during difficult times in their lives.  Having been on the receiving end many times, it is one of those small acts of kindness that reminds you how much people care about you.    This week I made dinner for a friend who had a baby.  I've got quite the system down now.  But it's taken years of taking meals, receiving meals, and figuring out what works best.  Here's a few things to keep in mind...

Jam brings us together!

We hosted a few new friends for dinner the other week.  We don't know each other very well so I wasn't sure exactly what to make for dinner.  Breakfast seems to be a pretty safe bet.  The refrigerator was filled with bacon, sausage and eggs and I made biscuits.  Maybe someone would make a breakfast sandwich, maybe eat them all separately, who knows.  But those basic elements gave people a starting point.   The biscuits went out and we started grabbing jams to slather on them. Cooking with kids needs a little...

When my girls were little, we pushed stools over to the kitchen island so they could help make cookies. We'd get out plastic bowls and put a bit of each ingredient into their bowls so they could see texture and taste differences in the ingredients.  This really took a lot of patience and became impossible when #3 came along but I thought it was important.  Now that the kids are becoming teenagers, I can see how critical those early years were and how important it is to Cook with your Kids! Cooking with kids needs a little... Patience - While...
