Food bringing people together

Food is really amazing.  It fuels our body, tastes great (well, my kids aren't really sold on a bunch of vegetables but they're still young?), and it has the ability to bring us together.  We use it to celebrate major holidays like Thanksgiving, celebrate milestones like birthdays, and gather neighbors for summer block parties.     Recently my parents meet my mother's siblings to celebrate a milestone birthday for my grandfather.  Living in different time zones, they don't get together much but when they do there are stories told of the event.  Mostly about the food my aunt makes.  She...

Cooking with kids needs a little...

When my girls were little, we pushed stools over to the kitchen island so they could help make cookies. We'd get out plastic bowls and put a bit of each ingredient into their bowls so they could see texture and taste differences in the ingredients.  This really took a lot of patience and became impossible when #3 came along but I thought it was important.  Now that the kids are becoming teenagers, I can see how critical those early years were and how important it is to Cook with your Kids! Lesson on life through death

My friend died the other day.  It was a surprise.  It hurts. She wasn’t someone I set out to settle into my life. She was the receptionist at my former job and it was her job to show me how to work the phones, she fixed the copier when no one else could, and she made sure I had enough candy for all my kids ministry events.  We didn’t have to become friends, we could have simply existed in the same space.  Somewhere between painting event sets, talking about where to buy the best seeds for gardens, and standing by each other in...

Pot Roast fills my kitchen and my heart

The first church I worked for was a large Methodist church where my husband and I attended during our first years of marriage.  We were young, had lots of free time and got involved in many aspects of church life.  It was such as special time in our life where we grew into adults surrounded by some amazing people. One of my favorite days of the week was Wednesday.  We had a midweek program that included dinner cooked in the church kitchen by wonderful teams of volunteers.  By mid afternoon, the scents of roasts spending hours in the oven would fill building.  Pork Roast night...
