Be unique!

Leona's.  For some of you, that's all I had to say.  Now I've lost you to the smooth texture, the bright flavors, and the unique combination of tastes created in the Leona's kitchen.  If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you've got to try an ice cream sandwich from Leona's!   Leona's is a lactose free product but you'd never know it from the taste.  One of it's founders, Katie, has lactose intolerance and tried for years to find something she could love.  She received an ice cream maker for a wedding gift, started experimenting, and the rest is...

Food bringing people together

Posted by Robin Abel on

Food is really amazing.  It fuels our body, tastes great (well, my kids aren't really sold on a bunch of vegetables but they're still young?), and it has the ability to bring us together.  We use it to celebrate major holidays like Thanksgiving, celebrate milestones like birthdays, and gather neighbors for summer block parties.     Recently my parents meet my mother's siblings to celebrate a milestone birthday for my grandfather.  Living in different time zones, they don't get together much but when they do there are stories told of the event.  Mostly about the food my aunt makes.  She...

Mustard - This might just be a phase but...

Starting a business is always an adventure.  Dealing with vendors, purchasing choices, cash flow (ugh, I hate that one) and weather are just a few areas I've learned a lot in the last year.  But the real surprise is how much I’ve learned about food and what we’re putting in our bodies. Food science has been important as our population grows, as we expand to more rural areas, and discovering ways to make our food safer.  It truly is amazing that we can create food that is shelf stable, get a greater variety of food in whatever area we live and...

Cheers had the right idea

Posted by Robin Abel on

“Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came; you want to be where you can see, our troubles are all the same.” How many of you sang this as you read it?  This is one of the most well known theme songs from the 80’s show Cheers.  This song was so popular that it reached the top of pop music charts, got an Emmy nomination, and has been voted the best theme song ever.  We all want to feel special. We all want to feel like we can add something to the world. And we all...
