BABY GOATS!!!!

Posted by Robin Abel on

Say that in your best teenage girl voice. BABY GOATS!!!!  We're in a phase that we love baby goats, and perhaps other baby animals, but can't convince anyone (notably my husband) that we should get one.  My girls think they are super cute and we need one. My son just loves animals and would have 1 of everything. I love that they eat anything and when you live on 4 acres, eating poison ivy and overgrown brush sounds like a good idea.  Did you know you can rent goats too?  See, we've really thought about it.   This Monday, I...

Adventures as a vegetable farmer

My husband grew up with a large garden that they ate from all year round.  After moving to a rural 4 acres, it seemed logical that we should do the same.  It's sustainable, good for environment, and there are lots of resources to help us succeed.  I have books, grow lights, seeds, knee mats, a rain barrel! Food science has been important as our population grows, as we expand to more rural areas, and discovering ways to make our food safer.  It truly is amazing that we can create food that is shelf stable, get a greater variety of food in whatever area we live and...

Cooking with kids needs a little...

Posted by Robin Abel on

When my girls were little, we pushed stools over to the kitchen island so they could help make cookies. We'd get out plastic bowls and put a bit of each ingredient into their bowls so they could see texture and taste differences in the ingredients.  This really took a lot of patience and became impossible when #3 came along but I thought it was important.  Now that the kids are becoming teenagers, I can see how critical those early years were and how important it is to Cook with your Kids! Cooking with kids needs a little... Patience - While...
