Loose Leaf tea is becoming a new favorite

Posted by Robin Abel on

I'm not much of a hot beverage person.  It might be a consistency issue, or a temperature one, or I'm just crazy.  Any answer will be acceptable.  But lately it's been growing on me because I've found better products taste so much better (shocking, I know!).   We work with two coffee supplies, both whom are wonderful!  Last year when I was picking up an order at Allegheny Coffee and Tea, the owner suggested we bring in a mix your own loose leaf tea section to Penn Pantry.  He said it's a fun thing for customers and since we're small...

Jam brings us together!

We hosted a few new friends for dinner the other week.  We don't know each other very well so I wasn't sure exactly what to make for dinner.  Breakfast seems to be a pretty safe bet.  The refrigerator was filled with bacon, sausage and eggs and I made biscuits.  Maybe someone would make a breakfast sandwich, maybe eat them all separately, who knows.  But those basic elements gave people a starting point.   The biscuits went out and we started grabbing jams to slather on them. It’s funny how nuts we go about fall flavors this time of year.  All a retailer needs to do is slap "Pumpkin" on the front of something and it flies out the door.  We don’t want pumpkin in February, but can’t get enough of it in September. We ordered a new seasonal flavor for the store from Primal Palate the other day called Apple Pie Spice.  I have selflessly taken it upon myself to see how many things I can use with this.  I’m not sure peas will taste like apple pie if we use it but it might be worth a try. I...

Mind blown!

You would have thought I was inflicting permanent damage and was going to scar my children for life on Wednesday.  We loaded into the car and drove a lengthly half an hour west towards a blueberry farm to pick berries for the store.  When we arrived, two of them literally fell out of the car onto the grass complaining of car sickness and whatever else was bothering them when I stopped listening.  "Hello Mr. Farmer.  These are my darling children who are super excited to pick blueberries today. Thank you for having us."  Good golly. We started picking, still complaining about the heat...

Spice-A-licious! if that's a word

Posted by Robin Abel on

A friend said to me the other day, "You are really into those spices!"  Clearly the vast amount of facebook posts including our new spices is saying something about my cooking.  We were not a bland cooking house growing up so spices are very important to me.  When I got married, one night I asked my husband, "How do you make ground beef?"  He answers "Beef?"  Oh no, that's not it!  You have to add a bunch of other stuff to it.   We've changed up our spices in the store to include 3 different companies with different focuses.  We've been using them...
